In 1887, George Westinghouse noticed Tesla’s alternating current at the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. Westinghouse was looking for a way to deliver strong and efficient power to the entire nation. He was convinced Tesla’s current would be able to supply the nation with power, so he bought his patents. Westinghouse and Tesla were Edison’s biggest competition. In 1893, Westinghouse and Tesla won the rights to supply the lighting for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago over Edison. By powering the exposition in Chicago, Tesla’s AC current instantly became the worldwide standard of the 20th century.
